set up PPA repository for Ubuntu users to get a relatively recent system-installed version of Twisted

We've argued against setuptools in the past because apt does what it does better than setuptools does it, and (on our preferred platform) that's generally what users should be using. But we also haven't been actually building debs, at least not in a way people can use.

Launchpad has this neat feature that I've been using a lot of where you can set up a "personal package archive" that packages more recent versions of a particular package than the operating system does. We should do this for Twisted so that we aren't gated on new Ubuntu releases, or so that LTS users can upgrade Twisted.

We recently uploaded packages for Twisted 8.2.0 and Ubuntu Hardy to our PPA:

They were accepted by the official maintainer and uploaded to Debian and Ubuntu Jaunty. Is there a Twisted team in Launchpad that one could join? We (Fluidinfo) can provide the resources (i.e. me ;-)) to regularly upload packages against the latest LTS to the official Twisted PPA.

Awesome! We should really have a chat about official packaging independent of this ticket.

The Twisted team is here:

I've started a thread in the Twisted mailing list for talking about official packaging, as Glyph suggested:
