#1750 defect closed wontfix (wontfix)

Solaris tar does not work with Twisted tarball

Reported by: damon_register Owned by:
Priority: normal Milestone: Twisted-2.4
Component: website Keywords: Solaris tar
Cc: Branch:

I was trying to build Twisted on Solaris 10 with no luck. After a lot of time I discovered that the Solaris tar was not correctly expanding the Twisted tarball. A coworker had run into similar problems with Solaris tar on other things. Perhaps other users would have figured it out faster than I did but it surely would save some trouble for others if the link for the source tarball had next to it a warning about the Solaris tar. Using gtar I was able to build Twisted on Solaris 10 with no trouble.

Currently we don't even have a Solaris buildbot. If you are interested in Twisted support for Solaris, consider contributing one.

However, Solaris tar is widely acknowledged to be a total piece of shit. You should always use gtar on Solaris systems. Even if we did have a Solaris release-buildbot to verify that the tarball worked properly, the steps required to make it work (for example, reducing the length of filenames) might break other things in Twisted and are generally not worth it.

Consider reporting this bug with Sun instead.
