Unless it's a regression, let's not delay any further.  The next release will be faster!

That's not how the release process is supposed to work.  Make the release branch, and development should proceed as usual.  (Not having any code freezes on trunk is the whole reason the process specifically uses a branch that is merged after the fact.)
