One of the original inspirations for Twisted was a C++ library, the 
ADAPTIVE Communication Environment: 
http://www.cs.wustl.edu/~schmidt/ACE.html - I believe it has been ported 
to Windows, among other platforms.

Good luck.  I do not envy you having to write C++ at this level :).
