Great idea, Sean.  Also, some kind of object containment hierarchy could 
be used to offset the handshaking time.  For example, the server would 
compute a checksum of the timestamps of the objects in a given 
hierarchy, transmits the sum, and only if that sum differs from the one 
the client generates for the equivalent hierarchy does the client 
request subsequent sub-hierarchical checking,
