No fade-in. Begin full-motion video clip (FMV) -- graphics are better-quality, allowing for improved rendering of faces and other detail.
Character needs to understand that video progresses regardless of buttons pressed, and must sit back and chill. Lest you think this is obvious, think of younger children twiddling the controllers of an arcade game while it's in automated demo mode. They're able to amuse themselves for some time doing this, even as the demo loops and characters do the same thing every time. I remember being convinced when I was younger that I was actually affecting the Pac Man demo when I did this -- maybe not moving the characters, but influencing what happened next.
Doors part L and R (futuristic door sound) and we see a low-angle close-up of Squall's instructor, Quistis as she enters (sound of boots clicking on floor).
The overall effect of the angle and motion of the character across the frame feels diagonal -- her face goes from lower R to upper L.
The overall impression I think the director is trying to give: Quistis is a commanding presence, especially as seen from her student's sickbed.
