Packages of Twisted for various operating systems
While you can always install Twisted from the source tarball, if there are recent packages available for your operating system, you should probably use those. Pre-packaged versions of Twisted have already been tested, and often list precise dependencies in a format which is friendly to the host OS.
If you are not going to use a pre-packaged version of Twisted, it is suggested that you do not install it site-globally to avoid conflicting with your OS; e.g. use the --prefix argument to setup.py install.
Twisted has been integrated in the OpenBSD port tree as devel/py-twisted on 2006/07/29. Official packages are provided with OpenBSD 4.0 and higher. Report problems to Aleksander Piotrowski or Eric Faurot.
Mac OS X
Packages are maintained by Daniel Henninger, info at http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/search.php?summary=twisted
A package for Leopard's built in Python is available at http://dreid.org/twisted/Twisted-2.5.0_py2.5_osx10.5-KitchenSink.dmg
This only includes PyCrypto and Twisted 2.5.0 because ZopeInterfaces and PyOpenSSL both ship with Leopard.
NOTE: There is a twisted core 2.4 and twisted words installation in /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5/Extras/lib/python/twisted so you'll either need to explicitly set PYTHONPATH to put /Library/Python/2.5/site-packages first or you'll need to remove the shipping version.
A metapackage built with MacPython 2.4 is available at http://dreid.org/twisted/Twisted-2.4.0_py2.4-KitchenSink.dmg It includes Universal Binary builds of PyCrypto, PyOpenSSL, and ZopeInterfaces, and Twisted 2.4 in a single mpkg.
Some parts of Twisted are packaged by Neal Nelson?. A list of available packages is here: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/ports.cgi?query=twisted&stype=all
Twisted is in portage, maintained by marienz@…. The stable versions are a bit old, you probably want ~arch for any "serious" development. http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=twisted should tell you what versions are available. Also note dev-python/twisted is just core, you (currently) have to merge the subprojects you want separately.
Twisted packages are available have been in the standard Fedora repository (and formerly extras) since Fedora Core 2. They're being maintained by Julian Sikorsky based on earlier packaging done by Thomas Vander Stichele?.
