Clarity of intent, or something like that.  `Deferred.called`, `Deferred._suppressAlreadyCalled`, `DeferredList.fireOnOne{Callback,Errback}, `DeferredLock.locked`... these aren't integers on which to perform arithmetic.  They're flags indicating one of two possible states.
