#3649 enhancement closed duplicate (duplicate)

more specific warning about plugin cache

Description

Would it make sense for twisted/plugin.py to catch exceptions from

attempts to update the dropin.cache, and report them to the user as "warning: cache couldn't be updated" instead of as "error: permission denied"?

For one thing, this would hopefully mean that fewer people just read the error message and the run sudo chmod +w $PATH_TO_CACHE.

Also, it would help people know that it is not necessarily a fatal error.

For anyone who might stumble across this ticket while trying to understand the traceback that is reported now when the cache directory is not writable, the correct solution is almost absolutely certainly not to change the cache directory to be world writable. This "solution" has major (negative) security consequences.
