October discussion of Unicode led to this post by glyph:

http://twistedmatrix.com/pipermail/twisted-python/2005-October/011573.html

Which I think explains clearer than anything what happens when you take out the
weird unicode assertion. Having this in the FAQ would (a) cut down on
unicode-related ranting and (b) remind us why this was a bad idea, should anyone
in the future have to maintain that code who doesn't already understand this stuff.

It belongs in the same place as the existing Unicode FAQ and needs only a little
editing cleanup.

Just to clarify, I think it should be *added* to the FAQ, not replace it.

Is this already covered in this FAQ entry?

Not in as much detail as glyph covered it. However, I see there's a precedent of linking to other documents in that FAQ entry. Hooray. So how about we link to glyph's post and be done with this.
