Thanks a lot, Scott. Patch applied (with one minor change - b64encode instead of encodestring().strip()).
(PS - thanks for pointing out that weird mailer behavior, too. I assume my mailer is getting confused by some header and replying to the wrong place. I'll have to take a look at it some point)
