<p>Not a direct answer to your question, but I hope to get twisted.positioning in the next release of Twisted. It's a new and improved interface for positioning (including NMEA) that I started back when I was writing something extremely similar to what you are now. Hopefully you'll be one of its first happy users :-)</p>
